How many times have you heard “It’s a man’s world.”? Probably too many but if you are a woman trying to have a fabulous career in radio broadcasting you are probably one of the ones saying it. Don’t get me wrong. You can be on the radio as a sidekick to the alpha male and comedian, but asking for your own show? Now that’s just pushing it sister.
Well, that was the case years ago. Although, the radio airwaves are still male-dominated, more and more women are becoming the focal point of key airplay times. That is the case for Pamela Aneise of 101.1 The Beat and the queens of 102.5 Venus FM, Lulu and Trish who are on from 3pm to 7pm.
It started when 102.5 The Party FM mysteriously became 102.5 Venus FM in the blink of an eye. 102.5 now caters to women of just about every age. Hence, the need for lead female radio disc jockeys was obvious. Lulu is a remnant of The Party with her morning show “Lulu and Brad About You”. When a need for a partner arose, there was no second guessing who it would be. Trish was a fill-in for the Lulu and Brad About You morning show. “It was absolutely combustible. It was so much fun. It was so exciting. It was like we clicked,” Trish recounts about the day she came in with Lulu to fill-in. There is little mystery as to why they perform so well together. Even though their lifestyles are different, their paths into the broadcasting industry are almost identical.
Lulu grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and her passion for entertaining was obvious. She took dance classes at an early age which led her to performing at a party for Donald Trump in life. Lulu and her sisters sang in a band that performed in Las Vegas and even Japan. Her passion however has always been broadcasting. “I really wanted to be a reporter on the E! Channel. I wanted to do that gossip show. Hey you never know!” She did become an entertainment reporter for a syndicated radio production company which transitioned into a radio show. Twelve years later she is half of the dynamic duo that is Lulu and Trish. “I wouldn’t give up what I did before, but I like the path I took and I really like what I am doing.”
